Rich in history and tradition

Since Roman times, the road to Scotland has crossed the River Greta before climbing up the Stainmore pass and on to Carlisle.

In those days there was a large Roman settlement at Greta Bridge and today’s hotel is built upon its ruins. In fact the ramparts of a Roman Fort support part of the present-day hotel.

Photographs in our entrance porch clearly show the Roman settlement as seen today, while pottery and arrowheads found during building excavations can be found in the Bowes Museum.
